Building in the floodplain – reminder

Dear Town of Wilmot officials,

I am sending this email to you as a yearly reminder of the responsibilities your community has, as a National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)-participating community. Wilmot has been participating since 4/1/1986.

NFIP community responsibilities continue to include the following:

  • Adoption of floodplain management regulations that meet or exceed NFIP standards (initially done when the community joins the program).
  • Enforcement of those regulations through a local permitting process which ensures that:
  • a permit is issued for any proposed development in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) as shown on FEMA flood maps.
  • once a permit is issued, any development performed in the SFHA meets the applicable requirements in your community’s regulations.

You can find more resources and information about the NFIP and its requirements through the NH Floodplain Management Program’s (NH FMP) website and the NH FMP’s Flood Lines quarterly newsletter which provides the latest NFIP-related news, information on upcoming events, the status of FEMA flood map updates, and more. Please contact me if you’d like to be added to the email distribution list for the newsletter.

Our goal is to help New Hampshire communities be successful in the NFIP and we encourage you to use the resources listed above. If you have follow up questions related to your community’s participation in the NFIP, please feel free to contact me at 603-271-1755 or by email at

Thank you.
