10-digit dialing now mandatory

As of October 24, 2021 the FCC has required that all local calls in New Hampshire will require 10 digits (1-603-xxx-xxxx).

The transition is needed due to the designation of 9-8-8 as the new nationwide three-digit suicide and mental health crisis hotline effective July 16, 2022. Any area code that includes a 988 prefix (which in this state is the town of Farmington) must transition to the 10-digit dialing.

This will affect any equipment or software programmed to make 7-digit calls. Please check your phone contact lists, fax machines, alarm systems with a phone connection, call forwarding settings, speed dialing and voicemail services and update them by adding the area code.

The nationwide 9-8-8 number is not in service yet. Until then the hotline number for suicide and mental health crisis help is 1-800-273-8255 (1-800-273-TALK). For additional information, see www.fcc.com/suicide-prevention-hotline.
