RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING
MINUTES FROM MAY 9, 2006

Discussion:
Richard, Kelsie, and Samantha reviewed their visit to the area at the ball field which included an idea for laying out a parking area.
This area could be 50 feet by 100 feet to accommodate up to 20 cars. This would alleviate some of the parking issues that are currently happening. The area proposed would need minimal tree cutting to accommodate such a use.
In considering this parking area, an area was also measured to include a playground. This area is proposed as being on the left of the entrance to the parking area. It was noted that there were numerous lilac bushes which could be used to create a natural boundary in addition to a need for fencing.
Sumner reported that he had received a quote of $3000 for fencing similar to that used at the Community Center. This is a 3 foot high split rail fence with wire mesh fencing behind. Matt wondered about getting a quote on just the materials as perhaps there were people in town who would be willing to help install it.
The colored fencing used by New London at Bucklin Beach was also discussed as an option as it is chain link and more similar to what is already at the ball field. It would also need less maintenance over time. Sumner to investigate.
Discussion was had about perhaps posting one side of the road “no parking” once the new area was installed as there are safety issues. Melinda will bring up at the next selectmen’s meeting a need to increase signage in the area due to the safety concerns.
To do list for next meeting:
Samantha and Kelsie –write letter and send to various “big box” stores in area requesting discount/donation?
Richard and Matt –stake out area for parking lot and determine what is needed for excavation. Also stake out area of playground to determine need for fencing.
Melinda –meet with Chad Denning (New London recreation director) to get more information on equipment, safety standards/regs, get information on bleachers, check out slide at WCA to determine if wanted at ball field area.
Sumner –continue collecting information on fencing. Get prices which include installation and which are only for materials.
